Jose Mourinho blasted his players for over celebrating Juan Mata’s goal in Manchester United’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg clash against Hull City. Hull City put on a resolute display despite playing without any recognized centre-backs and held off the Red Devils effectively before Mata beat Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic at the far post in the 56th minute. The hosts then celebrated in front of the Stretford End for a lengthy period, much to their manager’s dismay.
“We needed to play,” he told Sky Sports after the game. “In cup ties every goal can be crucial, so why celebrate when you have half an hour to play?
“I don’t think we should, there is no reason to celebrate the first goal.”
Manchester United won the match 2-0 and will play the reverse fixture at KCOM Stadium on 26 January, 2017.
