Columbus Crew SC got the better of 10-man New York City FC 4-1 in the first leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal on Tuesday night at MAPFRE Stadium.
The 4-1 win puts the home side in prime position to advance following Sunday’s match at Yankee Stadium.
The hosts got off to the perfect start against the run of play when Ola Kamara pounced on a rebound from a Federico Higuain shot and tapped home to make it 1-0.
After failing to take advantage of a string of opportunities, the visitors were reduced to 10 men as Alexander Callens was sent off for elbowing Justin Meram.
Afterwards, Columbus perfectly utilized their one man advantage and added three more goals by their name while David Villa managed to grab an away goal for NYCFC.
