A new study shows that that students in the United Kingdom who write their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams in the same year as a football tournament tend to underperform. Between the World Cup and European Championships, there’s international football every two years and football fans struggle to focus on anything else during that period of time. Research conducted by Robert Metcalfe, Simon Burgess and Steven Proud compared GSCE results in the 2000s for all teenagers in England in tournament years to ones where there was none. They concluded that the chances of achieving a passing grade fell by 12 percent during a tournament year, proving a negative effect football has on exam performance.
