Plans for Barcelona to set up a team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) have hit a roadblock due to the Catalan’s club’s existing kit supplier deal with Nike. Barca want to be the first European soccer club to launch a team in the US women’s division but will have to sort out some issues with the league first. The Spanish champions have an existing deal with Nike that runs until 2023 and covers both the men’s and women’s teams. The NWSL has their own league-wide partnership with Nike, but that deal expires at the end of the 2019 season. Following this season, the league is free to partner with a new technical supplier, and if they do, it contravenes Barcelona’s deal with Nike. Therefore, before officially entering the NWSL, Barca want assurances over an exemption for their Nike kit.
