The chief of referees for Serie A, Marcello Nicchi, insists that there is little to change regarding VAR after a ‘very positive’ season of its use. Uhm… was he paying attention this season? The whole process needs to be looked at and improved. It takes far too long for any sort of decision to be made. Offside decisions should be reviewed in seconds. It’s very clear, is the player offside or not. Then, when it comes to other incidents, literally everyone involved from the players to the fans, to those watching on tv are sat there for minutes waiting on the referee and VAR to then make the VAR gesture and run over to the screen and check out the incident himself. Why does it take so long for VAR officials to tell the ref to look at the incident in question again?
