Expansion soccer franchise taps city’s Latin American heritage as they unveil branding.
Miami’s new Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise, owned by English soccer icon David Beckham, has unveiled its name, crest and colours ahead of their 2020 arrival in the US top tier.
The club will be called Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, with the Spanish name expected to be informally shortened to Inter Miami. The club website, as well as the team’s social media handles have been branded as such. The Miami franchise’s motto has also been revealed – ‘Libertas, Unitas, Fortuna.’
According to a club statement, the Latin American roots of the name are representative of Miami’s geographical makeup.
The club’s new crest and colours have also been unveiled, with two herons featuring on a pink and black shield.
The announcement of the name, colours and crest has been made across multiple platforms in South Florida, with souvenir editions of The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald newspapers, as well as murals of the crest produced by local Miami artists.
Beckham, who is also the president of football operations at the franchise, said: “This is such a proud day for myself and for the entire team. It’s an honour to announce the new name and crest to our fans.
“We are taking another important step in establishing our club and today marks an important moment in the history of Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami.”
Jorge Mas, Inter Miami managing owner, added: “Our city and our fans draw their strength from the dreams of a global population that calls Miami home. It is only fitting that our name pays tribute to the inclusiveness that makes us who we are.”
The Miami expansion was officially granted in January, with the team set to play at a temporary venue during its inaugural season in 2020, before its own venue is fully constructed.
The current proposal features a multi-use complex at the Freedom Park site of what is currently Melreese Country Club, the city’s only public golf course. Situated near Miami International Airport, the design is set out over one million square feet, featuring 750 hotel rooms, municipal soccer fields, as well as the flagship 25,000-seater stadium.
City commissioners have given their approval to the plan, which will be the subject of a public referendum in November.
