Cristiano Ronaldo is in discussions with Facebook for a reality show following the life of the soccer star, according to a report from Variety.
In what the news outlet suggests would be the social media platform’s “biggest original series deal to date”, Ronaldo will feature in a 13-episode docuseries on Facebook Watch, the social media giant’s video platform for TV-style content. Apparently CAA is packaging the series, to be produced by Matador Content and Religion of Sports, a sports-media firm founded by Gotham Chopra, Michael Strahan, Tom Brady and production company Dirty Robber.
The show would document “every aspect” of Ronaldo’s life, according to Variety, and see the star pocket around US$10 million for the programme, which would closely follow his relationship with model Georgina Rodriguez and provide insight “into his life as a father and family man”.
Sources differ on how advanced the negotiations are; ranging from close to being finalised to in the early stages.
Ronaldo, who has been heavily linked with a UK£88 million move to Serie A giants Juventus, has over 120 million followers for his official Facebook page, making him the most popular athlete on the social media platform. The company has already agreed a deal with the soccer star to show a scripted drama series from Ronaldo and Paul Lee’s newly launched studio, Wiip, which follows a high-school girls’ soccer team in upstate New York and tackles themes of racial, ethnic and class differences.
Facebook have added a number of their own original programmes to Watch over the past year, including a series on National Football League (NFL) star Tom Brady, which followed the player on and off the field ahead of the Super Bowl, and which has pulled in nearly 52 million views. The new Ronaldo show would follow a similar pattern to Brady’s ‘Tom Vs Time’.
