Manchester United beat Chelsea to Secure Lukaku’s Signature While Rooney Returns to Everton

Wayne Rooney rejoined his old club as Romelu Lukaku travelled in the opposite direction to his new one despite a last minute rally by Chelsea to salvage their own deal for the free-scoring Belgian on Friday night.

Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, saluted the Everton-bound Rooney as “our greatest-ever goalscorer” while Lukaku revealed he would never have been able to turn down an offer from Old Trafford, describing his new employers as “the biggest club in the world”.

Rooney, 31, played 559 times for United, scoring 253 goals.

Lukaku is also only the fourth player to score more than 80 goals in the Premier League before turning 24, alongside Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Wayne Rooney. He has also scored more goals than any other Everton player in Premier League history (68).
