Joel Matip might miss six more matches for his club Liverpool as his country’s football federation claims he has refused to play for the national team.
Joel Matip was included in the Cameroonian squad for African Cup of Nations but the defender claims he has retired from international football and has no intention to play in the tournament.
Joel Matip, 25, played his last match for Cameroon in September, 2015.
FIFA says Matip will not be allowed to play for Liverpool without Cameroon’s consent as long as Cameroon stay in the tournament, meaning Matip could not play for Liverpool before 11 February, if Cameroon make it to the AFCON final.
Matip was withdrawn from Liverpool’s squad on Sunday against Manchester United.
