Barcelona Part Ways with Xavi, Set to Appoint Hansi Flick

Barcelona has decided to part ways with head coach Xavi, just a month after convincing him to remain in his role. The 44-year-old Spaniard had initially announced in January his intention to leave the club at the end of the season but later reversed his decision. Now, former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick is set to take over the reins.

Xavi will oversee Barcelona’s final match of the season against Sevilla on Sunday before stepping down. This decision comes as a surprise, considering Barcelona’s recent efforts to retain him. According to reports from Sky in Germany, Barcelona has reached a verbal agreement with Flick to become the new head coach, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

The club expressed its gratitude towards Xavi in an official statement: “FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”

Under Xavi’s leadership, Barcelona currently sits in second place in the league, trailing champions Real Madrid by 12 points. Xavi also guided the team to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain. His tenure saw notable successes, including winning the LaLiga title in 2023 and the Spanish Super Cup shortly after.

However, recent comments from Xavi in a press conference, where he opened up about the club’s financial struggles, are said to have angered club president Joan Laporta. This added tension likely contributed to the decision to part ways with the coach.

Sevilla’s manager, Quique Sanchez Flores, who will also be leaving his club after Sunday’s game, criticized Barcelona for their treatment of legendary figures. He highlighted the departures of Lionel Messi and Ronald Koeman as examples of this trend. “Xavi is a coach who has cared a lot about the club. He has experienced many things as a player and has done a good job as a coach,” said Flores. “I shouldn’t say this, but how badly Barcelona treats its legends. Koeman, Messi, with Xavi now… what a bad streak. I wish clubs would value their legends. That adds up.”

Xavi’s departure marks the end of an era for Barcelona, as they look to the future with Hansi Flick at the helm.
