Barcelona President Joan Laporta has not dismissed the possibility of pursuing legal action regarding Lamine Yamal’s disallowed goal in their recent match against Real Madrid. During the game, Yamal appeared to score, putting Barcelona ahead 3-2, but the goal was controversially not awarded. Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, managed to clear the ball despite it seeming to have crossed the goalline. The absence of goal-line technology in La Liga meant the referees could not confirm the goal, relying instead on VAR, which could not definitively resolve the incident.

The match ended in a 3-2 defeat for Barcelona, with Jude Bellingham scoring the decisive goal in added time. In response, Laporta announced plans to request audio and video from the game from the Spanish FA’s Technical Refereeing Committee to assess the situation further. He expressed readiness to “take all available measures to reverse the situation” if they conclude an error occurred, including potential legal action.

Laporta also mentioned the possibility of requesting a replay of the match, citing a precedent in the Belgian Pro League where a game was replayed due to a VAR mistake. However, that decision was later overturned by the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport. Similarly, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had previously called for a replay of a Premier League game after a similar incident.

Highlighting the disparity in technological support across leagues, Barcelona’s manager Xavi criticized La Liga for not implementing goal-line technology, a sentiment echoed by goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen who labeled its absence “shameful for football.” The match saw goals from Andres Christensen and Fermin Lopez for Barcelona, and equalizers from Vinicius Jr and Lucas Vazquez for Real Madrid. Real Madrid currently leads La Liga, sitting 11 points ahead of second-placed Barcelona.
