PSG Crowned Ligue 1 Champions

Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned Ligue 1 champions after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), France’s professional football governing body, confirmed that the 2019/20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons have been ended.

To get to this result, the LFP used a performance index based on the number of points taken from matches played; a points-per-game basis. Thus, confirming PSG as champions for a third consecutive year. PSG were 12 points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand, when league play was suspended indefinitely back on March 13th.

The LFP were hoping to resume the season by mid-June, but the federal government intervened and banned all sporting events, including behind closed doors, until September.

This decision also sees Marseille and Stade Rennes finish second and third respectively, meaning they qualified for next season’s Champions League, while Amiens and Toulouse will be relegated to the second division.

Lyon, who finish seventh and will miss out on European competition completely, are not happy with the decision and have threatened legal action, claiming they could lose tens of millions of Euros because of it.

The Dutch Eredivisie has also cancelled their season, but have decided to not award the championship to current leaders Ajax, while also cancelling promotion and relegation.

As for the other main leagues in Europe, no decision has been made yet on when or if the season will resume. What is known, is that the leagues have until May 25th to inform UEFA of their decision.
