Barcelona Ter Stegen Out
Barcelona faces a challenging period as their star goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, is set to be sidelined for several months due to a significant injury. The 32-year-old Germany international successfully underwent surgery on Monday after suffering a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee during Barcelona’s commanding 5-1 victory over Villarreal in LaLiga on Sunday. Spanish media sources report that ter Stegen is expected to be out of action for at least eight months.
Despite the loss of their first-choice goalkeeper, head coach Hansi Flick remains optimistic about the team’s defensive capabilities, placing his confidence in Inaki Pena, a promising talent from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. “Inaki is doing very well, including during pre-season. He has worked exceptionally hard to earn his place. He is focused and ready to perform,” Flick remarked ahead of Wednesday’s home match against Getafe. “We are confident, but we also need to manage our strategy since many of our defenders are young. Currently, we don’t feel pressured and we trust in Inaki.”
Inaki Pena, aged 25, has been part of Barcelona’s La Masia setup since he was 13 years old. He has made 23 first-team appearances, conceding 39 goals and keeping five clean sheets. Last season, Pena played in 10 league games, maintaining a save percentage of 56.4%, which is below ter Stegen’s impressive 73.5%. Additionally, Pena conceded 17 goals from 13.89 expected goals on target (xGoT), reflecting an underperformance of 3.1 in terms of goals prevented. In comparison, ter Stegen conceded 27 goals from 27.84 xGoT faced, demonstrating his effectiveness and reliability between the posts.
Barcelona’s injury challenges extend beyond ter Stegen. The team is already missing key players, including new signing Dani Olmo, midfielders Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, and Fermin Lopez, as well as defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen. Despite these setbacks, Barcelona has kicked off the season impressively, securing six consecutive victories and currently leading LaLiga by four points over reigning champions Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick, formerly of Bayern Munich, is not content with just maintaining the team’s strong start. “We analyzed the game against Villarreal and identified several areas for improvement,” he stated. “We haven’t reached the end of the road. There’s always room for growth. We are progressing step by step.”
As Barcelona navigates the season without key players, Flick’s confidence in Inaki Pena and the young defensive lineup will be crucial. The team’s ability to adapt and overcome these challenges will be a significant factor in their pursuit of LaLiga glory. Fans remain hopeful that the squad’s strong performance will continue, even in the absence of ter Stegen, and are eager to see how Inaki Pena steps up to fill the void.
Barcelona supporters will be closely watching Pena’s performances, hoping he can rise to the occasion and help maintain the team’s top position in the league. With Flick’s leadership and the depth of Barcelona’s squad, the team aims to continue its successful run and secure another LaLiga title this season.
